Antony Gormley. Firmament and Other Forms

24 February until 5 May 2013

On the occasion of the donation of the work Firmament III to the Middelheim Museum, Antony Gormley will be exhibiting a series of his polyhedral works in Het Huis.

The oeuvre of Antony Gormley (1950, United Kingdom) can be viewed in prestigious galleries and museums all around the world. Gormley has also become famous for his sensational installations and sculptures for public space. For over 40 years, he has been inspired by the human body and the space surrounding to create his sculptures. But increasingly his attention has shifted to complex physical phenomena such as cell structures and DNA.

In 2012 the Middelheim Museum received the gift of a major work, Firmament III (2009), which was placed in a unique location in the oldest section of the Middelheim Museum. Firmament III (2009) is an irregular three dimensional net surrounding a human-shaped void approximately ten times life-size. In the open-air museum this work will pick up the light of the changing seasons and be a constant invitation to the visitor to consider his or her place in the order of things.

From 24 February until 5 May 2013, a series of Gormley’s 'polyhedra' sculptures that have never previously been exhibited in this constellation will be on show in Het Huis (The House) on the 'Hortiflora' to draw attention to this exceptional addition to the museum’s collection. In the Middelheim Museum these works engage in an explicit dialogue with the weather conditions, the light and the ever changing natural surroundings.

Or as the artist explains: “This exhibition reflects on the human’s body connection with architecture. All the works start from the bubble matrix, a random yet consistent geometry, which occurs in nature and also forms the structural syntax of Firmament III”.

After the recent additions of works by Ai Weiwei, Roman Signer and Philippe Van Snick to the Middelheim’s collection earlier this year, the Middelheim Museum now adds yet another masterpiece to its exhibit, with Firmament III. The work will be officially inaugurated during the opening of the Gormley exhibit, Firmament and other Forms.
