PROSPECT 58

2 April t/m 15 June 2008

Young artists invaded the Hessenhuis with PROSPECT 58 like they did in 1958.

In 1958, a group of young artists invaded the Hessenhuis, in search of a place to exhibit their experimental works. The abandoned warehouse became a meeting place for the like-minded and people with an interest in this form of art. Under the G58 label, or Groep-58, they organised debates, lectures and exhibitions.

Young artists yet again invaded the Hessenhuis with PROSPECT 58, revisiting its original cultural use.

Expo 58 was worth reflecting on. But the Hessenhuis, as a space for exhibiting New Art, raised the question of whether the non-figurative art which caused such a stir at the time, still has a future today.

Pieter Vermeersch formulated his answer in the form of a selection of artists, who like him, still find answers to these crucial artistic questions, questions of then and now, everyday questions… about colour, light, space…
