Valuable supporting collections
Did you know that the Middelheim Museum also has hidden collections? Models and maquettes, drawings, editions, and graphic works … Often small and fragile objects that cannot be displayed outdoors, safely preserved in depots. A selection is showcased here in the Collection Pavilion. These valuable supporting collections offer a broader and deeper insight into sculpture. They reveal, for instance, the creative process behind an artwork or provide more context about the sculptures in the art park.
Masterpieces
Some collection pieces are related to our “Masterpieces”, artworks that Flanders considers rare and indispensable. These objects are on permanent display here. In addition, there are rotating selections of depot sculptures that connect to the outdoor artworks. Just like in the art park, recurring themes can be found here: human nature, urban wilderness, entanglements, and movements.
Library
The Collection Pavilion also houses part of our library collections. Since 1870, the Middelheim Museum has been an internationally renowned research center for sculpture and art in public spaces. Take a seat at the reading tables and immerse yourself in our publications. Are you looking for a book on a specific theme or artist? The library staff is happy to assist. To inspire you, a selection of remarkable publications is featured at the large reading table.
Much to discover
Design drawings, letters from artists, pen-and-ink sketches, and studies. Maquettes, models, preparatory works, and media art. Hundreds of art books, publications, monographs, and art magazines. In the Collection Pavilion, you can explore the hidden treasures of the fragile depot collections and be amazed by the versatility of sculpture.
