A place for connection
The Middelheim Museum aims to play an active role in shaping a resilient and healthy city. That is why this zone has been conceived as a shared space where we seek deeper connection. With two distinctive entrances, we build bridges to the city, the sports fields across the road, and our neighbours at the hospital and the university.
You will find artworks on the boundary between architecture and sculpture. You can step into them, use and share them. They are functional and social hubs where museum visitors meet and which are open for the surrounding communities to use.
Interact and play
Other sculptures invite you to play, move freely and use your imagination. Touching artworks is usually not allowed, as sun cream on your hands or a ring you’re wearing might damage them. However certain sculptures can be touched carefully. They offer a sensory way of engaging with art and create moments to share with others. In this way, they reinforce the positive impact of art and nature on health and resilience.
You are most welcome! We hope that our neighbours and visitors feel at home in this place—a space for meeting, play, conversation, relaxation and free imagination.

Co-creation
Developing a new zone
Together with our neighbours, UAntwerp and ZAS (UKJA), we have made the museum more accessible from the hospital. Together, we also explore how nature, art and health influence one another.

How it started
A new entrance
In 2023, together with our neighbours, we began searching for a new connection. Together, we opened the door to wellbeing. The project was supported by the Flemish Government and the King Baudouin Foundation.
