Restoration
Middelheim Castle has been protected as a listed monument since 1976. The castle was built in the neoclassical style in the second half of the eighteenth century, on the foundations of an older structure dating from before 1645. Small bridges flank the building on either side, while the museum café is located on the semicircular terrace. The restoration works aim to ensure the long-term preservation of this historic monument.
The project includes repairs to the moat walls, bridges, façades, roofs, dormer windows, exterior woodwork, cornices, and gutters. A number of limited interventions will also be carried out inside the building to facilitate future maintenance. If everything proceeds according to schedule, work will begin in October 2026 and is expected to be completed during 2028.
Middelheim Museum remains open
The Middelheim Museum will remain open to visitors throughout the restoration period. The art park, visitor pavilion, and the majority of the collection will continue to be accessible.
The area around the castle will be designated as a construction site. As a result, some routes, entrances, and pathways may temporarily change. Certain artworks in or near the work zone may also be temporarily out of view, screened off, or relocated to ensure the safety of both the restoration works and the artworks themselves.
Museum café MIKA will temporarily close from Tuesday 29 September 2026.

Yes. Both the museum and the main entrance will remain open. The visitor pavilion, where all visits begin, will also stay accessible.

No. Museum café MIKA will be temporarily closed during the works, starting on 29 September 2026. As soon as more information becomes available about practical implications or possible alternatives, it will be published here
- Will all artworks remain visible during the works?
No. Some artworks in and around the construction zone will be temporarily out of view. They may be screened off or relocated to ensure the works can be carried out safely and to protect the artworks.
- Will the routes through the park remain accessible?
Yes. Some routes in the vicinity of the castle may be temporarily altered because of the works. We will do everything possible to keep the park as accessible as possible.
- What about access and parking?
The car park on Beukenlaan will remain accessible. However, the construction works may affect parking facilities in the immediate vicinity of the castle.
