Henk Visch. Exactly as I remembered it

22 February until 23 March 2014

An experimental, collection-related exhibition, on paper and in the Braem Pavilion.

Henk Visch (b. 1950, The Netherlands) is one of the leading contemporary artists in the open-air museum’s collection. Posture Editions has published an artist’s book with the artist. The perfect opportunity for the Middelheim Museum to showcase recent and older works, which cannot be displayed outside.

About the publication

Exactly how I remembered it is a mental journey through Henk Visch’s mind.

Together with the artist, Posture Editions selected a specific segment in his artwork, which is showcased in a publication. The resulting book can give a new interpretation to the work of Henk Visch, an internationally renowned artist, who has inspired several young generations of artists. Visch gave Posture Editions the freedom to develop their own vision and interpretation of his work, with this unique publication.

The book combines sculptures from his figurative work with the series Exactly how I remembered it. These sculptures were created with metal wire, pearls, hair, rope… they resemble “drawn” sculptures. By combining these “drawn” works with the figurative sculptures, it seems as if the latter are thinking about the wire sculptures and arrive at the conclusion: Exactly how I remembered it. A memory in the form of a work with an absurd composition, which is vaguely definable and therefore automatically raises questions about the “exactitude” of the human memory.

The title of this Posture publication is taken from a large series of sculptures which have rarely or in some cases never been exhibited or reproduced. The un-monumental, almost transparent and informal nature of these sculptures makes this series so striking.

Recent drawings by Visch, which have been printed to size, but in black and white, have been added in a separate section, as a comical commentary. Henk Visch is a talented draughtsman and storytellers. The drawings can also contribute to an “exact” memory.

The accompanying text, Beelden om mee te nemen, was written by Christophe van Gerrewey, an and architecture critic and novelist.
