Stone Class with Joëlle Tuerlinckx

An exclusive workshop with Joëlle Tuerlinckx in the Braem Pavilion.

Friday 18 July 2025 from 14:00 to 18:00

Observational drawing

Joëlle Tuerlinckx (1958, Belgium) collects stones, sorts them, and groups them under what she now calls her "Fundamental Collection". She observes that the natural patterns of the stones, as depicted in her childhood book on minerals, resemble those found in the work of artists such as Piet Mondrian, Sol LeWitt, or Malevich. Her drawing workshop, “Stone Class,” invites you to experience this resemblance through the practice of observational drawing.

Observing, drawing, and classifying stones through short instructions, each introduced by stories that recount, in a very personal way, certain ‘drawing moments’ — fragments from her own "History of Drawing". All of the drawing notes from the Stone Class will come together to form a "cinematic corpus": a moving image of stones, in a way she imagines Walt Disney might have done.

On the artist

Joëlle Tuerlinckx works with simple and pure materials such as paper, string, text, and light. In her work, dots, circles, lines, and colors are recurring elements. She creates spatial installations in dialogue with the exhibition space, and the presence of the viewer completes the work.
